Storytime at the Library – Session 22

Preparation

Equipment: Books, story bag, puppet, flannel board, kit for 5 Little Ducks, puppet

Share: Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late by Mo Willems. We discuss whether or not kids should get to stay up late.

Share: Ninja, Ninja, Never Stop by Todd Tuell and Tad Carpenter. We try some ninja moves as we discuss the book.

Game: We look in the story bag to find a puppet. Silly puppet, Sookie, tries to say nursery rhymes but kids have to help him with the rhyming words.

1. Twinkle Twinkle
2. Baa Baa Black Sheep
3. Mary Had a Little Lamb
4. Jack and Jill

Flannel board: 5 Little Ducks. We say the rhyme and change the board to fit, counting the ducks.

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only four little ducks came back.

“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only three little ducks came back.

Went out one day
Over the hill and far away

“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only two little ducks came back.

“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back.

Evaluation: Sookie was a huge hit! The children thought it hilarious when he couldn’t find the right rhyming word but instead sang “sausage” or something equally inappropriate. Observing the lack of subitizing when counting ducklings reminded me all over again how very young these kidlets are! Must follow up with more counting games. The Pigeon is becoming a real favourite.
